How to use the creative process

Dec 15, 2022

A lot of times people believe that they are not creative and that creativity is something that you either have or you don’t. We believe anyone can be creative and that it isn’t a mystical power that only artist’s have. I also want to share with you that even us creatives feel this way from time to time.

Not long after deciding to start Limitless Designs we received our first branding project. The name of the client is Sandro and his company is named Aligned. Sandro wanted to bridge the gap between the spiritual community and the hardcore fitness community. Doesn’t sound too hard there are many different people from different walks of life in both communities and there’s a possibility for overlap.

The challenge: Sandro wanted 7 designs for 7 products based of the concept of chakra’s Chakra (cakra in Sanskrit) means “wheel” and refers to energy points in your body. They are thought to be spinning disks of energy that should stay “open” and aligned, as they correspond to bundles of nerves, major organs, and areas of our energetic body that affect our emotional and physical well-being.

The chakra’s are well knowned in the spiritual community but not so much with your hardcore fitness enthusiasts. The chakra’s may seem to soft and yoga like in comparison to someone who likes to identify themselves as someone who likes the grit and grime of gym culture.

The Creative Process:

SImplification: Our first step in creating these designs was to take the chakra symbols that already exist and find a way to make less illustrative so that they can be scaled to any size based on the products they will be shown on.

  1. We noticed that the traditional way of representing a chakra was with a flower at the center of each chakra design there is a triangle housed in a circle. In spirituality a triangle symbolizes mysticism. We decided to simplify the flower design, keep the triangle at the center of the wheel.

  2. Appropriateness: The next step is the design appropriate for the intended audience? We simplified the design enough for it to fit on any product, and for those in the spiritual community it was recognizable enough for them to know it represented the chakra’s. But it didn’t feel appropriate; the flower pedals housing the circle design felt a little to feminine for your average gym goer.

  3. Further simplification: We decided to drop the flower pedals and keep the circle and triangle design. We felt this was the perfect combination of staying true to what chakra are while having a feeling of masculinity in the design. Sandro loved this idea but felt it reminded him too much of Netflix’s Squid games.

  4. Thinking outside the box: At this point we simplified as much as we could while still maintaining the look and feel of the chakras. We decided to look back at our own individual experience and prior knowledge of spiritual concepts and thought of frequencies. In many spiritual beliefs everything is energy that has a vibration and frequency. We decided to take the concept of frequency and incorporate it to the design. We looked up the color spectrum and used.
